Working At The University Of Cambridge

Feb 21, 2019

EMDD UNIVERSAL DIAMOND DRILLING was asked to look at the removal of an existing raked ribbed slab and flat ribbed slab in a live university lecture theatre, in the heart of Cambridge. Working with the demolition company we devised a method to carry out the works required utilising robotic Brokk 100 and 280 machines and then used a track sawing method around the perimeter of the slab and beams to allow for the installation of steel work for the new slab installation. Due to the weight limits on the slab below a propping system had to be installed to accommodate the weight of the Brokk 100 and concrete spoil. Once this was installed we commenced the crushing of the raked slab from below. The next stage of the operation was to remove the flat ribbed slab using a Brokk 280, which we did working from the basement below. The central reinforced concrete beam which measured 12m x 1m x 450mm was then removed using both of the Brokks. The final stage of the operation involved track sawing the perimeter of the slab/beams ready for the new steel and slab to be installed. Our works were completed on programme for a satisfied customer with minimal disruption to the surrounding university buildings. We are therefore working within the current guidelines of the UK Government with regards to social distancing etc and have just a skeleton team of men on hand to carry out any necessary works.

We currently have just one person manning our office telephone and they are happy to take any enquires that you may have on 0115 967 9000.
